The Effect of cisapride on the patients with chronic gastritis

Abstract
|
|
|
The usefulness of the gastrointestinal prokinetic agent, cisapride, in the management of chronic gastritis was studied in a randomized and double blind comparision with placebo.
In a 8-week double blind trial, the therapeutic effect of 10mg of cisapride t.i.d. was evaluated in 26 patients with chronic gastritis.
At 4 week treatment, a good or excellent response was obtained in 21.4% and 4291/o of the patients in cisapride group, while 25.0% and 16.7% in placebo group. After 8 week treatment, 81.8% (cisapride group) and 50.0% (placebo group) of the patients were excellent or good while 18.2% (cisapride group) and 50.0% (placebo group) were moderate or no effect.
Patients with endoscopically shown gastritis benefited from the cisapride treatment.
The results suggested that (1 )the placebo response is relatively high in the treatment of chronic gastritis (2)cisapride is significantly superior to placebo in relieving the dyspeptic symptoms of the patients with chronic gastritis.
